Your First Step to Creating Balance
A home that feels good is incredibly valuable. It can be a peaceful place to rest, a space that sparks creativity, and a strong foundation for success. This is what feng shui promises: organizing your space to help your life. As we move into 2025, now is the perfect time to refresh your home's energy. This complete feng shui checklist will help you with clear steps you can take right away and over time to create harmony. To start, here are five easy changes you can make in the next five minutes to immediately improve the energy in your home.
5-Minute Feng Shui Changes for Instant Energy Improvement:
- Clear your entrance. Take away shoes, coats, and any mess from your front door area so energy can flow in easily.
- Open your windows. Let fresh air and natural light, called Sheng Chi, move through your home for at least 15 minutes.
- Fix a squeaky door. Put oil on the hinges of any door, especially your front door, to stop annoying sounds and help energy flow better.
- Clean your stovetop. The stove represents money and health; make sure all burners are clean and working properly.
- Clean all mirrors. Make sure they are spotless and show a clear, positive view, which doubles the good energy in a room.
These small changes create big improvements. The connection between our surroundings and how we feel isn't just an old belief. Research in environmental psychology shows that a clean and organized space can greatly reduce stress and improve focus, proving that a tidy, thoughtful home really works.
Basic Feng Shui Ideas

To really benefit from this checklist, it helps to understand why we do these things. Feng shui isn't about superstition; it's about watching and guiding energy. Three main ideas form the foundation of this ancient practice.
Chi: Life Energy
Chi (or Qi) is the invisible life energy that flows through everything—our bodies, our world, and our homes. The main goal of feng shui is to help positive, strong Chi (Sheng Chi) flow well while reducing the effects of stuck or negative Chi (Sha Chi). A home with good Chi flow feels lively, supportive, and full of life. Blocked or fast-moving Chi can make you feel stressed, tired, or unstable. Our checklist helps you unblock and guide this important energy.
The Five Elements
The Five Elements, or Wu Xing, are the basic building blocks of everything in the universe. These are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element has certain colors, shapes, materials, and energies connected to it. In feng shui, we use these elements to create balance in a space. If a room feels cold and unwelcoming, we might add Fire and Wood elements to bring in warmth and life. If a space feels messy, we might use Earth elements to make the energy more stable.
| Element | Represents | Colors | Shapes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Growth, Energy, Action | Green, Brown | Rectangle, Column |
| Fire | Passion, Fame, Energy | Red, Orange, Bright Yellow, Pink | Triangle, Pointed |
| Earth | Stability, Grounding, Care | Beige, Sandy, Earth Colors | Square, Flat |
| Metal | Clarity, Precision, Joy | White, Gray, Metallics | Round, Oval, Arched |
| Water | Flow, Wealth, Wisdom | Black, Dark Blue | Wavy, Uneven |
The Bagua Energy Map
The Bagua is the energy map of feng shui. It's an eight-sided grid with nine sections, each matching a specific area of your life, like Wealth & Success, Fame & Reputation, and Love & Marriage. This map is placed over your home's floor plan (starting from the front door) to find which part of your house affects which part of your life. By improving a specific Bagua area—for example, by adding a healthy plant to your Wealth corner—you can invite positive energy into that part of your life. This checklist helps you activate these areas room by room.
Room-by-Room Feng Shui Checklist
This is the most important part of transforming your home. Follow these steps to create a smooth flow of energy throughout your living space. Focus on one room at a time to make the process feel manageable and rewarding.
The Entrance
Known as the "Mouth of Chi," your entrance is where all energy enters your home. It sets the mood for your entire living space.
- Bright and welcoming. Make sure the area has good lighting. A dark entrance can attract stuck energy.
- Clear path. There should be nothing blocking the door or hallway. Remove piles of shoes, bags, and coats.
- Clean and working door. The front door should open completely and smoothly. Fix any squeaks, peeling paint, or broken parts.
- Avoid mirrors directly facing the door. A mirror in this spot can push incoming positive energy right back out. Put it on a side wall instead.
The Living Room
This is the social center of your home, where family gathers and friendships grow. Its energy should be comfortable, welcoming, and balanced.
- Strong position for seating. The main sofa should have a solid wall behind it and a clear view of the room's entrance. This creates a feeling of safety.
- Encourage conversation. Arrange furniture in groups that help people talk to each other. Don't push all seating against the walls.
- Balance the elements. Use a mix of colors, textures, and materials. For example, pair a metal lamp (Metal) with a wooden coffee table (Wood) and soft cushions (Earth).
- Add living plants. Healthy plants bring strong Wood energy for growth and life. Avoid spiky plants like cactus, which can create harsh energy.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is an important center of food, health, and wealth. A clean and balanced kitchen supports the well-being of everyone in the home.
- Clean and organized. Keep countertops, and especially the stove, clean. A clean stove attracts money opportunities.
- Stove in strong position. Ideally, the cook should be able to see the kitchen entrance while at the stove. If this isn't possible, place a small, shiny surface like a mirror or stainless steel to reflect the door.
- Fix leaky faucets. A dripping tap can represent a slow drain on your money or health. Fix all leaks quickly.
- Separate Fire and Water. To prevent a clash of elements, avoid placing the stove (Fire) directly next to or across from the sink or refrigerator (Water). If they are, place a Wood element (like a small plant or green mat) between them to help balance.
The Bedroom
Your bedroom is a place for rest, recovery, and closeness. The energy here should be calm, supportive, and peaceful (Yin).
- Bed in strong position. Place your headboard against a solid wall. You should have a clear view of the door but not be directly in line with it. This is known as the "coffin position" and can feel uncomfortable.
- Balance for partnership. If you are in a relationship or want one, create balance with two nightstands and two lamps. This encourages equality and partnership.
- No electronics. Keep TVs, computers, and exercise equipment out of the bedroom. The active energy and blue light from these devices disturb peaceful sleep.
- Calm and soothing colors. Use skin tones, soft blues, greens, or earthy neutrals. Avoid overly exciting colors like bright red or orange, which are too active for a restful space.
- No mess under the bed. The space under your bed should be clear to allow Chi to move freely around you while you sleep.
The Home Office
Your home office is your center for career, focus, and success. The goal is to create an environment that supports clear thinking and achievement.
- Desk in strong position. Sit with a solid wall behind you for support and a clear view of the door. This prevents you from being surprised and keeps you in control of your career.
- Keep it organized. A tidy desk and organized files help clear thinking and efficiency. Mess creates mental confusion.
- Define your workspace. If your office is part of another room, use a rug, bookshelf, or screen to visually separate the work area from the rest space.
- Add career-boosting elements. To improve your reputation, place a lamp or red object in the far-center area of your desk or room (the Fame/Reputation Bagua area).
The Bathroom
Bathrooms have strong downward-flowing water energy, which can drain positive Chi from a home. The goal here is to contain and balance this drain.
- Keep the door closed. This simple action helps prevent the positive energy from the rest of your home from being pulled into the bathroom and flushed away.
- Keep the toilet lid down. For the same reason as above, always keep the toilet lid closed when not in use.
- Add plants or wood elements. The Wood element uses water, helping to "lift" the energy. A bamboo plant or wooden shelves can balance the draining effect.

- Make sure there's good air flow and light. A dark, damp bathroom creates stuck energy. Use an exhaust fan and make sure the space has good lighting.
Energy Clearing Checklist
Beyond what you can see, your home holds invisible energy. This is the next level of creating a truly balanced space, addressing the non-physical mess that affects your home's Chi.
Energy mess is the invisible weight in your home. It's the stuck energy left from arguments, the stress built into your workspace, and the digital noise that follows you everywhere. Here's how to clear it.
The Digital Cleanup Checklist
- Clean your computer desktop. Your computer's desktop is a virtual workspace. Organize files into folders and delete old, unused icons for mental clarity.
- Unsubscribe. Go through your email and unsubscribe from newsletters you never read. Each unread email is a small piece of energy mess.
- Improve your social media. Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad, anxious, or negative. Your digital feed should be inspiring and positive.
- Set tech-free zones/times. Choose areas, especially the bedroom and dinner table, as tech-free to allow for real rest and connection.
The Sensory Clearing Checklist
- Space clearing ritual. After an argument, illness, or when the energy feels heavy, open the windows and do a clearing ritual. You can burn sage or palo santo, ring a bell, or clap loudly in the corners of each room to break up stuck Chi.
- Scent therapy. Use an essential oil diffuser to change the mood. Lavender and chamomile are calming, while citrus oils like orange and lemon are uplifting and cleansing.
- Sound healing. Sound is vibration. Play calming, high-vibration music, such as classical music, healing frequencies, or nature sounds, to cleanse the space.
The Emotional Baggage Checklist
- Remove negative reminders. Let go of gifts from past bad relationships or items that are strongly connected with unhappy times. These objects hold onto that energy.
- Set intentions. Walk through your newly cleared home and purposefully set an intention for each room. For example, in the living room, you might say, "This is a space of joy and connection." In the bedroom, "This is a place for deep rest and love."
Make Your Checklist Personal
General feng shui rules are powerful, but for a truly life-changing effect, you can personalize your practice using your Kua number. This number identifies your personal lucky and unlucky directions, helping you align with energies that best support you.
Calculate Your Kua Number
Your Kua number is calculated based on your birth year and gender according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Note: If your birthday is in January or February, check the date of the Chinese New Year for your birth year, as you may belong to the previous year.
- For Males born in 2000 or later: Subtract the sum of the last two digits of your birth year from 9.
- For Females born in 2000 or later: Add 6 to the sum of the last two digits of your birth year.
- For Males born before 2000: Subtract the sum of the last two digits of your birth year from 10.
- For Females born before 2000: Add 5 to the sum of the last two digits of your birth year.
If you get a two-digit number, add those digits together to get a single digit. If your final result is 5, males use Kua 2, and females use Kua 8.
Find Your Lucky Directions
Once you have your Kua number, you can find your four good directions. People are divided into two groups: East Group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) and West Group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8). Your best directions will be within your group.
| Kua | Group | Success (Sheng Chi) | Health (Tien Yi) | Love (Nien Yen) | Growth (Fu Wei) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | East | Southeast | East | South | North |
| 2 | West | Northeast | West | Northwest | Southwest |
| 3 | East | South | North | Southeast | East |
| 4 | East | North | South | East | Southeast |
| 6 | West | West | Northeast | Southwest | Northwest |
| 7 | West | Northwest | Southwest | Northeast | West |
| 8 | West | Southwest | Northwest | West | Northeast |
| 9 | East | East | Southeast | North | South |
Use Your Kua Number
Use this information to make small but powerful changes to your daily life.
- Desk. Turn your chair to face one of your good directions while you work to improve focus (Growth) or success (Success).
- Bed. Point your headboard towards one of your good directions while you sleep. Your Health or Love direction is often best for this.
- Stove. If possible, try to face a good direction while cooking to put positive energy into your food.
Starting Your Journey
This is a lot of information, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. The key is to start small and be consistent. Feng shui is a practice, not a one-time fix.
When we first started, we focused only on the entrance and bedroom. Just clearing the mess by the front door and moving our bed made a noticeable difference in our sleep quality and how we felt starting the day. You don't have to do everything at once.
Your 4-Week Action Plan
- Week 1: Remove mess and Clean. Focus only on this. Go through each room on the checklist and remove mess, clean surfaces, and fix what's broken. This alone is a powerful energy changer.
- Week 2: The Big Three. Apply the detailed checklist to your Entrance, Bedroom, and Kitchen. These three areas have the biggest impact on your daily life.
- Week 3: The Rest of the House. Now, work on applying the checklist to your Living Room, Home Office, and Bathrooms.
- Week 4: Make it Personal and Improve. Calculate your Kua number and make small changes to your desk and bed placement. Try one of the energy clearing techniques, like burning sage or using a diffuser.
Accept the Flow
Remember, feng shui is a powerful tool for creating a home that actively supports and takes care of you. It is a journey, not a destination. Your home's energy will change as your life does, and you can always return to this checklist to make adjustments.
By taking these small, thoughtful steps, you are actively creating a space for more harmony, health, and happiness to flow into your life.
